Liberty’s 2015 football season came to an end Thursday night with a win over #4 Coastal Carolina. It was a season of ups and downs, and as we try to put into words all the season meant, here’s a look back at some of the great moments and top performances from the gridiron this season:
Rookie of the Year (Offense): B.J. Farrow
With there being so many freshmen and true freshmen making significant contributions this season, we decided to split the Rookie of the Year into an offense and defense dual award. The runner-up on the offensive side of the ball was Damian King (who will be plenty of fun to watch the next 3 years), but B.J. Farrow gets the nod as the winner. Farrow is a redshirt-freshman who caught the game winning touchdown catch against Coastal Carolina, but he impressed all season finishing with 32 catches for 448 yards and 2 touchdowns. Just as a point of comparison, Darrin Peterson, who rewrote the Liberty receiving record book, had 4 catches for 60 yards and 1 touchdown as a freshman. “I think he’s going to be pretty good for us,” Liberty quarterback Josh Woodrum said of Farrow. “He’s so, so, so talented…He’s going to chase (Peterson’s) records that’s for sure.”
Rookie of the Year (Defense): Chris Turner
Wow. Talk about a tough decision. Pick any of Corbin Jackson, Jeremy Peters, Juwan Wells, or Chris Turner, and you can’t go wrong. We gave the slight edge to Turner who finished the season with 24 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 4 interceptions, 2 pass break-ups, and 6 pass deflections. At 6’3″, many have compared him to Walt Aikens, and if he continues with this level of production, Turner could see his name called in the NFL Draft in a few years.
Most improved player: Avery James
After Gary Sampson was suspended, we all knew Avery James was going to be called upon in a big way. He answered the bell. James finished the season as the team’s 2nd leading tackler with 71 tackles and added 3.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 6 passes defensed, and 2 forced fumbles. As a junior in 2016, he will be counted on as a team leader on a defense that returns loads of talent.
Best Performance: Josh Woodrum vs Montana
His stats weren’t eye-dropping (16/30 for 260 yards and 2 touchdowns), but Woodrum controlled the game as he led the team to a big win in front of a record crowd. The win vaulted the Flames into the top 10 of all the national FCS polls for the first time this millennium.
The Gamebreaker: Darrin Peterson
Despite being opposing defense’s focus week in and week out, Petey still managed to finish with 906 yards receiving and 7 touchdowns on 68 receptions. He is the owner of all Liberty receiving records, single season and career. “He’s the best receiver I’ve ever played with,” Woodrum said after Petey’s 4th down catch helped lead the Flames to victory against Coastal Carolina. “Everyone knew who the ball was going to go to. I don’t know how they didn’t stop it.”
The Media Darling: Josh Woodrum
You all love him. You know you do.

Offense – correct pick in BJ Farrow
Defense – no way could it be Turner or Peters, too many let downs through out the year, would have given it to Corbin Jackson who made more plays overall through out the year
Special Teams – Now give it to King, who a lot of times seemed like he was one block away from springing an even bigger run,
