The Flames are back at Williams Stadium this afternoon against Monmouth and look to improve to 2-0 in the Big South. Here’s what to look for in today’s game:
1 – Rely on the Defense
The Liberty defense showed up big time last week in the win over Kennesaw St. The Owls came into the game averaging 40 points per game but the Flames defense held them to 21 points and came up with some big goal line stands in the 4th quarter to ice the game. While Monmouth’s offense has averaged nearly 40 points a game in their 4 wins, they’ve only averaged 9 points per game in their 3 losses, and the Liberty defense is much better than the Presbyterian defense that held the Hawks to only 13 points last week. It should be a good matchup for LU’s defense
2 – Play With ConfidenceĀ
The Flames are playing their best football of the season. The defense has been strong all season, the offense has been rolling the last 2 weeks with Buckshot Calvert in at quarterback, and the special teams was the difference last week with the kick off return for a touchdown and Probert’s 3 long field goals. This is a game the Flames should win, and they need to play with the confidence they’ve gained from the last two weeks.
3 – Payback for Last Season
Last year, the Flames fell on the road to Monmouth 20-17 in OT. It was a game the Flames should have won, but turnovers and mistakes cost them the win. This year, the Flames are back home and it’s homecoming weekend. Use the extra energy and motivation from last year’s loss to fuel them today.
