Liberty continued its best start in program history on Saturday night, when they traveled in to Nashville and beat Vanderbilt. With a 12-0 start as the calendar moves to the second half of December, there’s a case that can be made for the Flames to be ranked in the Top 25 when the updated poll comes out later today. . Let’s take a look at why…..
- The Flames are one of 4 teams that are still undefeated. It is late enough now where that it is something you can no longer ignore.
- The Flames have the most wins in the country at 12.
- Liberty has one of the best defensive teams in the country. Right now the Flames are 3rd in scoring defense, only allowing 51.9 PPG. Only 2 teams (Radford and Grand Canyon) have scored 60 or more points against the Flames.
- Prior to Saturday night, the Flames were missing a real signature win. Not that Vandy is a world beater but it is the best win LU has to this point of the season. Going on the road and beating an SEC school is impressive.
- Last year does matter a little. The Flames success last year, of winning a share of the ASUN’s regular season and tournament title, coupled with LU picking up its first NCAA Tourney win in schools history, shows this hot start is no fluke.
If you ask McCay I am sure being a top 25 team on December 16th is not too high up there on his goals for the team this year, but it would be significant step forward for the program.
NEXT UP for the Flames will be the DC Holiday Hoop fest against Towson this Friday at 5:00 PM.
