1. The Aggies have had a difficult time finding a conference home.
For all sports, NMSU is a member of the WAC, as was their football program until 2012 when the WAC ceased to offer football. They became an FBS Independent for the 2013 season before joining the Sun Belt as a football only member in 2014. Following the 2017 season, the Sun Belt decided to not renew NMSU’s associate membership, thus making the Aggies an Independent again.
2. Doug Martin is in his 6th season as head coach.
The former Kent State head coach and Boston College offensive coordinator has a 18-48 record at NMSU.
3. New Mexico State ended a 57 year bowl drought in 2017.
From 1960 through 2016, the Aggies had not made it back to a bowl game. That changed in 2017 when the Aggies won their regular season finale to improve to 6-6 and advance to the Arizona Bowl. NMSU would beat Utah State, 26-20, in overtime to win the bowl game.
4. Quarterback Josh Adkins made his first collegiate start in NMSU’s last game at UTEP.
In that game, Adkins was 9-for-18 passing for 156 yards, and 1 touchdown. On the season, the redshirt freshman is 23-for-42 for 334 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 2 interceptions. The Aggies have struggled on offense so far this season, scoring 16.4 points per game and totaling 273 yards of offense per game.
5. Former Boston College head coach Frank Spaziani is defensive coordinator for the Aggies.
Spaziani was head coach at BC for 4 seasons and compiled a 22-29 record at the school. He was fired in November 2012, and hired by New Mexico State in January 2016.
