Liberty welcomes (will it be a welcome?) former coach Danny Rocco and his Richmond Spiders to Lynchburg for homecoming Saturday. Why did Rocco leave Liberty in the first place?
1. Spiders are more fierce than Sparky.

2. To get out of his brother’s shadow.
Frank Rocco has been the head football coach at LCA since 2004. Under his leadership, LCA has won 5 state championships and 9 conference championships while compiling an overall record of 101-8. Clearly, Danny wanted to get out of Frank’s shadow and spread his own wings in Richmond.
3. Buz and Ned’s Real Barbecue.
This needs no explanation.
4. He felt more comfortable around rich kids from the Jersey Shore.
No, none of the Jersey Shore cast have attended UR, but several of their relatives and friends have.
5. He loves cats.
Coastal’s former coach David Bennett scared him with this dog & cat analogy. Danny left just a few months later.
6. He ran out of excuses for not making the playoffs.
The “tiebreaker rules aren’t fair” excuse only works so many times.
7. Jeff Barber would not approve his request for a wardrobe upgrade.
I would have been tired of that ’71 Liberty Football sweatshirt myself.
