For each basketball game this season, we will bring you 7 things you need to know about that game and that opponent. So, here’s a look at the Flames’ season opener, Randolph:
1. Liberty faced the cross-town school in last year’s season opener.
The Flames went on to win 74-53 in front of over 7,000 people in attendance.
2. Tomasz Gielo led the Flames against Randolph last year with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting.
Drew Smith added 10 points and 8 boards in just 16 minutes while Joe Retic had 5 assists and 4 turnovers in his Liberty debut.
3. Zach Desgain (#11) led the Wildcats in the game against the Flames last season with 14 points.
Desgain returns this year; he scored 8.3 points per game a season ago.
4. Cory Brown (#14) is Randolph’s top returning scorer.
Brown averaged 10.4 points last year for the Wildcats, but did not score in 15 minutes against Liberty last season.
5. The Wildcats will have to replace the production of Mike Ehilegbu who led the team in scoring (13.7) and rebounding (6.6) last year.
Ehilegbu had just 3 points and 3 rebounds on 1-of-8 shooting in the Vines Center last year.
6. Randolph was 15-11 last year.
They lost in the first round of the ODAC tournament after finishing 9-7 in conference play.
7. The Wildcats were picked to finish 8th in the 12 team ODAC.
Randolph-Macon is the preseason favorite to win the NCAA Division III conference.
