Liberty (6-13, 0-6) plays host to Winthrop (8-9, 3-3) tonight at 7pm. Here’s what you need to know about the Eagles:
1. They hold one of the best wins in the Big South this season, as they beat Clemson on November 17th.
Other than that, it was a pretty bumpy nonconference schedule for the Eagles who went 1-6 against Division I opponents after their win over the Tigers.
2. Winthrop is 2-1 on the road in Big South play this season.
They hold wins over Presbyterian and Asheville and lost to Gardner-Webb.
3. Keon Moore leads the Eagles in scoring.
The senior guard is averaging 17.5 points per game, and scored a season high 30 against High Point on January 3rd.
4. Xavier Cooks is in the running for Big South Freshman of the Year.
The 6’8″ wing is averaging 6.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.7 blocks per game.
5. Winthrop leads the all-time series against Liberty, 35-15.
The Eagles have won 6 straight matchups dating back to 2010.
6. Dale Layer is 1-8 against Winthrop in his 6 seasons with the Flames.
This includes the season-ending loss in the Big South Tournament last year where Liberty fell to Winthrop, 77-65.
7. Liberty hopes to avoid falling to 0-7 in Big South play for the first time since 1998-99.
The 98-99 season is the only other time the Flames dropped their first 7 Big South games. Liberty would finish that season 4-23 overall and 0-10 in Big South play. It was Mel Hankinson’s first season as head coach at Liberty.
