1. 2016 marks the first time the Flames have ever played one of the premier teams in Virginia, as Liberty travels to Blacksburg to take on Virginia Tech.
2. The Hokies will be playing their first game under a head coach not named Frank Beamer in 30 seasons as Justin Fuente takes over.
3. The Flames will face 3 preseason top 10 FCS teams’ this season including 2 in the nonconference portion of the schedule (Jacksonville State, Coastal Carolina).
4. 2016 marks the 4th consecutive year the Flames will face 2 FBS teams in the same season & 7th time in school history. Liberty plays at Virginia Tech on September 3rd and at SMU on September 17th.
5. Liberty hosts the 2015 FCS runner-up Jacksonville State on September 24th.
6. Jacksonville State’s quarterback Eli Jenkins was arrested and charged with domestic violence in January. In June his charges were dismissed. Jenkins was named the Ohio Valley Conference’s Male Athlete of the Year.
7. Former Auburn running back Roc Thomas has transferred to Jacksonville State. The former 5-star out of high school totaled over 700 yards and 4 touchdowns in his 2 seasons with the Tigers.
8. Coastal Carolina and Liberty will meet for the first time as non-conference opponents as the Chanticleers are transitioning to the FBS. Coastal will compete as an FCS Independent in 2016.
9. The other 2 non-conference opponents are Jacksonville and Robert Morris.
