We’ve made our way through the majority of the non-conference schedule as ASUN teams will begin facing one another on New Year’s Day. While the ASUN Player of the Year will be decided in conference play, it’s a good time to stop and take a look at who are the leaders in the clubhouse. Can Liberty have a player repeat as POY after Caleb Homesley did so a year ago?

DARIUS MCGHEE

Many times this award ends up going to the best player on the best team, and Liberty is out to the early lead for the best team and McGhee is most likely to have a best shot at this award. The dynamic scorer is currently averaging 13.9 points per game while shooting 37.3% from three point range as he is among the nation’s leaders in made three pointers. Despite being just 5’9″, McGhee is one of the team’s best rebounders, currently averaging 4.2 per game.

AHSAN ASADULLAH

Asadullah is the favorite as he was selected preseason Player of the Year following his sensational sophomore campaign that was highlighted by his three game run in the ASUN Tournament. If the Bisons challenge for the ASUN regular season title, Asadullah would have a great case for POY. He’s currently averaging 12.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game.

DONTARIUS JAMES

The Xavier transfer is having a great start to the season as he leads the league in scoring at 18.5 points per game. He’s also shooting 41.7% from three to go along with his 4.8 rebounds per game. The Dolphins are 6-2 to start the season, but they’re expected to be near the bottom of the ASUN. If James can lead them to a top half finish and continues to lead the conference in scoring, he has a shot at POY.

CALEB CATTO

After Liberty, FGCU has the best win in the conference this season as they defeated the Miami Hurricanes last week. Catto is currently third in the ASUN in scoring at 15.8 points per game while shooting 42.4% from three. He’s also averaging 4.6 rebounds and 2 assists per game. To remain in the ASUN POY race, Catto and the Eagles must remain near the top of the standings.

A few other guys to keep tabs on include Stetson’s Rob Perry, North Alabama’s Mervin James, and Kennesaw State’s Spencer Rodgers.
