Update: A day after suspending games through April 5, the ASUN Conference on Friday announced the cancellation of the entire spring sports season because of growing concerns related to the coronavirus.
Sports affected for Liberty include baseball, softball, men’s golf, men’s tennis, women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field.
Liberty’s women’s lacrosse team, a member of the Big East, also will not play its spring season following that conference’s decision to cancel all spring sports.
“We will pursue an additional year of eligibility for senior student-athletes who were unable to complete their seasons due to cancellations,” Liberty athletic director Ian McCaw said in a statement. “In addition, we are working closely with our coaches and student-athletes to best serve them during this very difficult time.”
Earlier on Friday, the NCAA’s Division I Council Coordination Committee stated “eligibility relief is appropriate” for spring sports. Final details of what that exactly means will be addressed at a later time.

“In support of the global community’s effort to limit transmission of the COVID-19 virus, and to exercise wise precaution in protecting the health of the entire ASUN family, the ASUN Conference joins the fight by suspending all intercollegiate competition, effective immediately, through at least April 5,” ASUN Commissioner Ted Gumbart said in a statement.
“Our Presidents’ Council will address the question of cancelling all spring competition tomorrow, March 13, and we will update this statement as needed following the conclusion of that 3:00 p.m. ET session.”
Liberty’s Athletic Director Ian McCaw issued the following statement:
“I’m deeply saddened for our student-athletes and coaches who will miss out on regular season and championship competition this spring. While we cannot replace these lost student-athlete experiences, we will pursue all available remedies and accommodations that the NCAA will provide.”
