Coming off last season’s run to the regional finals, Liberty’s baseball team has picked up where it left off. The Flames are 21-7 overall and 8-1 in the Big South. Liberty has won 15 out of their last 16 games including 7 straight. Only 12 teams in all of Division I have more wins than the Flames who are ranked 26th in RPI and 13th in NPI (Nolan Power Index).
The Flames pitching staff was simply dominant this weekend with a 3 game shutout sweep over Presbyterian. Liberty hasn’t allowed a run in 33 innings, and has only given up 2 runs in the past 5 games. In 18 of their 28 games this season, they have allowed 2 runs or fewer. In their 9 Big South games, Liberty is outscoring its opponents 66-14. The Flames are first in the Big South in both team batting average (.302) and team ERA (2.33).
Ryan Seiz has been the team’s early MVP as he is 1st in just about every hitting category in the Big South. He’s 1st in batting average (.435), 2nd in hits (47), 1st in home runs (6), 1st in runs scored (30), 1st in doubles (14), 1st in RBIs (26), 1st in total bases (81), 1st in on base percentage (.523), and 1st in slugging percentage (.750).
Liberty returns to action this week with a couple of contests with ACC opponents. Tuesday night the Flames play host to Duke before travelling to take on Maryland on Wednesday.
