Liberty traveled to Wilmington to take on Ohio and UNC Wilmington in their second week of competition. Liberty would go 2-2, with one victory coming against both teams. Later in the week the Flames traveled to Cary, N.C. to take on Missouri, where they picked up a 2-1 win.
Andrew Yacyk and Alex Close led the way from the batters box this week. Yacyk, a promising freshman, now leads the team with a .444 batting average and a .722 slugging percentage, while Close rebounded from a shaky week one with some good hitting, including a pair of home runs against UNC Wilmington.
Player of the Week
After much deliberation, I decided to go with pitcher, Blake Fulgham.
The Flames struggled hitting the ball against Missouri, only scoring two runs in the game, but Fulgham came to the rescue. He only allowed the Tigers, of the SEC, to score one run in seven innings before Ashton Perritt came on and closed them out. Liberty had been relying on their hitting to win games up to that point, scoring 8, 11, and 14 runs in their three wins, but Fulgham’s impressive outing allowed the Flames to get by with only two runs.
Upcoming
The Flames have a very exciting slate this week. They will host Ball State and Rider in the Liberty Invitational, which begins tomorrow, then will play a midweek game against Duke. All of the games this week will be at home, so make sure to get out and and support the Flames. They only had a recorded crowd of 28 against Missouri last week in Cary, so make sure to show them some love as the come home to Liberty Baseball Stadium.
