Our final Big South Football Power Rankings as another regular season is in the books. History was made this season as 2 Big South teams make the FCS playoffs for the first time ever. Looking forward to next season.
1. Stony Brook 9-2, 5-1
Stony Brook will play host to Villanova in the 1st round of the playoffs. Stony Brook becomes the 1st Big South team to gain an at-large bid to the FCS playoffs since Coastal did in 2006.
2. Coastal Carolina 7-4, 5-1
Coastal Carolina wraps up their Big South record 3rd trip to the playoffs after handling CSU 41-20. A terrific season for first year head coach Joe Moglia. The Chanticleers will face Bethune Cookman in the 1st round of the FCS playoffs.
3. Liberty 6-5, 5-1
The first season of the Turner Gill finishes much the way the previous 5 seasons have gone, one win shy of a playoff berth. Liberty was able to rebound from a surprising 0-4 start to finish 6-5. The Flames should have plenty of momentum heading into the 2013 season still seeking the program’s first trip to the FCS playoffs.
4. Charleston Southern 5-6, 3-3
Charleston Southern rebounded off their 0-11 season a year ago by finishing 5-6 overall. The Buccaneers were unable to help Liberty on Saturday though as their rival Coastal Carolina dominated them 41-20. A solid season for Jay Mills & company though.
5. Gardner Webb 3-8, 2-4
Gardner-Webb holds off Presbyterian 21-15 in their season finale. The Bulldogs finish 3-8 overall and 2-4 in Big South play. This program has really fallen off the past several years from when they dominated the Big South Conference during the conference’s early years.
6. VMI 2-9, 1-5
VMI fared admirably against Liberty, especially in the 1st half. In the 4th quarter, Liberty simply just took over. The Keydets are a rather young team, and will look to improve on their 2-9 season next year.
7. Presbyterian 2-9, 0-6
Presbyterian finishes their first season as a full Division 1 member with a loss 21-15 to Gardner-Webb. A dissapointing season for the Blue Hose going 0-6 in conference play. How safe is Harold Nichols’ job?
