Wow. Where has the season gone? I feel as though we just started getting into things.
With that being said, we only have one more week of the regular season left.

The Big South has fallen into shape and the victor has been crowned.
Liberty and Coastal will be featured on ESPN News for the first ever Thursday night match-up between two Big South teams. This is bound to be a fun game.

Keep an eye out next week as we reflect on each Big South team and the season they had.

Here are your updated conference power rankings:
Note last week’s rankings in (parentheses).

  1. (1) Charleston Southern 9-1, 6-0 *Nationally ranked #8

Last week: Liberty 24 CSU 31

With their win over Liberty, Charleston Southern clinched the Big South outright and fought through the conference undefeated. Austin Brown had a wonderful game against the Flames, putting up 301 yards passing with 4 touchdowns. The Bucs, having one of the best defenses in the FCS, held Liberty to 53 rushing yards and 274 total yards on the day. CSU has truly emerged as a force to be reconed with in the FCS.

Next up: @ Alabama, 4:00pm

  1. (2) Coastal Carolina 9-1, 4-1 *Nationally ranked #4

Last week: Kennesaw St. 13 CCU 45

With his performance on Saturday, Alex Ross earned national FCS honors. He threw for 262 yards and tied a school record with 5 touchdown passes. De’Angelo Henderson extended his scoring streak to 24 games as he rushed for 103 yards and a touchdown. Kennesaw and Coastal both scored touchdown before the Chanticleers put up 31 straight points extending into the 3rd quarter. Of course that put the game well out of reach for the Owls.

Next up: @ Liberty, 7:00pm {Thursday night on ESPNN}

  1. (3) Liberty 5-5, 2-3

Last week: Liberty 24 CSU 31

And just like that, Liberty’s second-wind on the season ran out. With three losses in the conference, it doesn’t look like the Flames will be heading back to the FCS playoffs for a second year. Coming into this game, Liberty was 5-0 when leading at halftime. This stat meant little to Charleston Southern who came out blazing in the 3rd quarter. In 60 minutes of play, the Flames could manage only 56 rushing yards and were out-gained 460-274.

Next up: Vs. Coastal, 7:00pm {Thursday night on ESPNN}

  1. (4) Kennesaw State 6-4, 2-3

Last week: Kennesaw St. 13 CCU 45

Kennesaw State traveled to Conway for the first time on Saturday where they hit quite a wall. With starting QB Trey White sidelined, Jake McKenzie took the reigns where he threw for 136 yards and led the team in rushing 85 more. Even though they picked up 259 yards on the ground, Coastal Carolina kept the spread option in check and didn’t let the Owls in the endzone.

Next up: @ Presbyterian, 2:00pm

  1. (5) Gardner-Webb 4-6, 2-3

Last week: ETSU 3 Gardner-Webb 28

This week the Runnin’ Bulldogs took a break from conference play to host a struggling East Tennessee State team. Gardner-Webb put up 446 yards of offense while their defense limited ETSU to 126. Tyrell Maxwell had 205 passing yards, 2 touchdowns with 63 rushing yards and another touchdown. The Bulldogs ran the ball 55 times for 222 yards. Really anywhere you look on the stat sheet favors Gardner-Webb heavily.

Next up: Vs. Monmouth, 1:30pm

  1. (6) Monmouth 4-6, 2-3

Last week: Presbyterian 16 Monmouth 21

Things were pretty back and forth between Monmouth and Presbyterian on Saturday. That is until the end of the 3rd quarter when Monmouth went up 10-21 to put the game out of reach for the Blue Hose. Cody Williams had 144 yards passing with 2 touchdowns. On top of this, the Hawks rushed for 208 yards and kept Presbyterian under 200 yards of total offense.

Next up: @ Gardner-Webb, 1:30pm

  1. (7) Presbyterian 1-9, 0-5

Last week: Presbyterian 16 Monmouth 21

Woof.
