The Big South officially opens conference play this week.
- (1) Charleston Southern 1-2, 0-0 *Nationally ranked #12
This week: ByeCSU had a much needed week off.
Next up: Saturday @ Monmouth, 1:00pm
- (2) Liberty 1-2, 0-0
This week: Liberty 14 SMU 29After a quick score for both teams to open the game, SMU and Liberty went relatively silent until the start of the 2nd half. The Flames continue to have offensive struggles. The team threw 4 interceptions, 3 of which came from starting QB Stephon Masha and a massed 183 passing yards between 2 QBs. The defense bent for a good portion of the game, holding SMU to 6 points in 5 redzone trips, but eventually gave way to large runs. The Flames had a chance to force overtime on the final drive of the game, but a pick-6 put the game out of reach.
Next up: Saturday vs. Jacksonville State, 7:00pm
- (3) Monmouth 2-1, 0-0
This week: Monmouth 7 Kent State 27The Hawks visited Ohio to take on the Flashes this weekend. Monmouth’s offense was limited to 199 yards on the day and avoided the shutout thanks to a garbage time touchdown. DE Darnell Leslie continues to make his presence known as he forced his 2nd fumble in just as many games.
Next up: Saturday vs. Charleston Southern, 1:00pm
- (4) Gardner-Webb 1-2, 0-0
This week: The Citadel 31 Gardner-Webb 24Here is your weird stat of the week: The Citadel only had 12 passing yards in the win against Gardner-Webb. This clearly means the Runnin’ Bulldogs weren’t too effective in keeping tabs on the Citadel’s run game. They allowed 419 yards and 4 touchdowns on the ground. Gardner-Webb’s offense preformed well, thanks to QBs Tyrell Maxwell 134 yards in the air and RB Khalil Lewis’ 97 yards on the ground. But their defense just couldn’t get the job done.
Next up: Saturday vs. The Citadel, 6:00pm
- (5) Kennesaw State 1-1, 0-0
This week: ByeThe Owls had the week off.
Next up: Saturday @ Duquesne, 1:00pm
- (6) Presbyterian 1-2, 0-0
This week: Presbyterian 31 Campbell 14The Blue Hose got their first win of the season against an undefeated Campbell squad Saturday. QB Will Brock and RB Darrell Bridges willed the team to this win as Brock had 4 total touchdowns and Bridges had a great showing, running for 159 yards and a touchdown. This is the best Presbyterian has looked this season.
Next up: Saturday vs. Florida Tech, 7:00pm
*Something to remember: During the beginning of the season, rankings don’t always do justice to the teams. Considering DII and FBS play, things are a little skewed. Once Big South play opens, it will be much easier to see how teams stack up against each other.
