A look around the Big South Conference as conference play continues. A virtual Big South Conference Championship elimination game takes place this weekend in Conway between Liberty and Coastal Carolina.
1. Stony Brook 7-1, 3-0
Stony Brook continues its impressive season and improves to 7-1 after handling Gardner Webb 41-10. The Seawolves should have no problem with the rest of their schedule (Presbyterian, vs VMI) before their season finale at Liberty in Lynchburg. Depending on what happens this weekend in Conway, that game on November 10 is setting up as a winner take all matchup. Stony Brook very well may be ranked in the top 5 by that date.

2. Liberty 3-4, 2-0
By looking at the scoreboard, one may think Liberty played very poorly this past weekend against Division 2 opponent Concord. However, Liberty played a very vanilla game, and Concord played perfect to keep the game close. Liberty was surely overlooking Concord, and looking ahead to this weekend’s showdown on the beach against Coastal Carolina. This game is a must win for Liberty if they want to win the Big South Conference’s auto-bid. Why? Because of the way the Big South tiebreaker works.
This week: @ Coastal Carolina 3:30
3. Coastal Carolina 3-4, 1-1
Coastal Carolina was impressive on the road against VMI knocking the Keydets off 34-7. Now the Chanticleers must shift their attention to conference rival Liberty. Coastal still has a realistic shot at capturing the Big South Conference auto bid for the 2nd time in school history if it wins out. This Saturday is their final significant hurdle to jump.
This week: vs Liberty 3:30
4. Charleston Southern 3-4, 2-1
Charleston Southern continues to win games and they now have 3 wins. With a home game against Edward Waters this weekend, CSU could grab its 4th victory of the season. A stark improvement over last seasons 0-11 campaign. Perhaps Jay Mills has got CSU headed back in the right direction?
This week: vs Edward Waters 1:30
5. Gardner Webb 1-6, 0-2
Gardner-Webb went to Long Island just to return home after a long trip with a 41-10 thrashing. No shame in that though as SBU has been doing that to every conference opponent they have played this season not named Coastal. Gardner Webb has its first chance at a win in conference play this weekend against VMI after dropping road contests to Liberty and Stony Brook.
This week: vs VMI 1:30p
6. VMI 2-5, 1-2
VMI drops a home game to Coastal Carolina 34-7. A disappointing season thus far for the Keydets. They will look to right the ship as they head to Boiling Springs to take on Gardner Webb.
This week: @ Gardner Webb 1:30
7. Presbyterian 2-6, 0-3
Very surprising to see Presbyterian struggling so much this season. Many had the Blue Hose picked 3rd or 4th in conference before the season began. Not sure how much Ryan Singer being dismissed from the team is to blame for this collapse. Singer was the returning starting quarterback that was dismissed from the program in the offseason after breaking team rules.
