A look around the Big South Conference as conference play continues. Only 2 teams remain in contention for conference championship.
1. Stony Brook 8-1, 4-0
Stony Brook dispatched Presbyterian with no problem 56-17 to improve to 8-1. The Seawolves have one more tuneup (vs VMI) before heading to Lynchburg in their season finale. How far will Stony Brook slide up the rankings this season?
This week: vs VMI 6:00
2. Coastal Carolina 4-4, 2-1
Coastal Carolina impressively took care of business at home against Liberty 36-12, evening the series 5-5. The Chanticleers must now stay focused on their remaining schedule beginning with Gardner-Webb this weekend. If Coastal wins out (which they should) and Liberty wins out (won’t be easy) then Coastal will win the Big South auto-bid. So, they still have a shot, but ti’s clearly Stony Brook’s league to lose.
This week: @ Gardner-Webb 1:30
3. Liberty 3-5, 2-1
Liberty lost out on their chance to continue to control their own destiny after getting beat 36-12 at Coastal Carolina. Where does Liberty go from here? Do the players stay committed to the cause? We will find out quickly as Charleston Southern comes in on a 3 game winning streak and looking for a resume building win. Liberty better be ready to play or they will lose at home in conference for the first time since 2006.
This week: vs Charleston Southern 3:30
4. Charleston Southern 4-4, 2-1
Charleston Southern has now won 3 games in a row after they took care of business at home 42-7 against NAIA Edward Waters. The Buccaneers have a shot to make a statement and turn heads as they head to Lynchburg with plenty of confidence. Charleston Southern will walk onto the Williams Stadium turf Saturday afternoon expecting to win.
This week: @ Liberty 3:30
5. Gardner Webb 2-6, 1-2
Gardner Webb was impressive in their 38-7 victory over VMI. They now get a shot to move up the conference standings as Coastal Carolina makes a visit to Boiling Springs.
This week: vs Coastal 1:30
6. VMI 2-6, 1-3
How long is Sparky Woods’ job safe? His time has got to be running out as they look to battle it out with Presbyterian for the cellar of the conference. Things won’t get any easier or prettier this week as they head to Long Island. VMI is sure to become just another casualty standing in Stony Brook’s path to another playoff trip.
This week: @ Stony Brook 6:00
7. Presbyterian 2-7, 0-4
Presbyterian is blown out at home again this season falling to Stony Brook 56-17 . At least Presby gets a chance to take a break from football and rest as they have an off week this week.
