The NFL Draft is still scheduled to go on as planned April 23-25, but it will be done during unsettling times around the country and the world.
Virtually all Pro Days have been canceled as players don’t get their final opportunity to showcase their skills in front of NFL scouts. There’s also no face-to-face meetings going on prior to the draft.
It’s unlikely this will affect the draft status of prospects like Liberty’s Antonio Gandy-Golden, who has already had numerous opportunities to showcase his abilities. He’s performed in front of scouts at the Senior Bowl and at the Combine. Not being able to perform in a Pro Day won’t hurt his draft status.
“He definitely needs to stay in shape, but he needs to stay healthy and safe too,” Freeze said of the 6’4″ wide receiver. “I think he’s done all he can do at this point. Every indication I get is I think he’d be drafted in the early 2nd, 3rd or 4th round. I think I’ve talked to every team about AGG.”
For other prospects like Liberty’s Buckshot Calvert, Jessie Lemonier, and Solomon Ajayi, not having a Pro Day can hurt them drastically. They don’t get that needed opportunity to perform in front of scouts and will have to rely on what they’ve done on the field during their college careers.
“There is no question it’s disappointing and it hurts,” Freeze said of Pro Day being canceled. “The thing that you hope is there’s enough tape to get them in a camp somewhere and that’s their chance. There’s also the XFL that hopefully will come back, that gives people opportunities. That’s the hope is that you get them into camp, but there’s no question, Pro Day was another chance to prove they deserve that opportunity so it definitely hurts.”
