Liberty University has fired head men’s basketball coach Dale Layer, according to a school release. The Flames went 8-24 this season including a 2-16 mark in Big South play.
Layer was Liberty’s head coach for 6 seasons and compiled an overall record of 82-113. The highlight of his tenure is the improbable 2013 run to the Big South Tournament Championship and auto-berth into the NCAA Tournament. However, the Flames have lost 20 or more games for 3 straight seasons for the first time in school history. Liberty’s final RPI has declined each of the past 5 seasons under Layer including this season’s current RPI of 347.
