With the release of the post-spring depth chart, we will be breaking down each position over the coming days of what to expect from Liberty’s 2016 depth chart. We begin with the secondary.
Secondary analysis:
The Flames took a big blow to its cornerback position towards the end of the spring when senior Wesley Scott tore his ACL during the last week of spring practice. The rest of the young secondary will have to step up in his place.
“We’re excited about our back-end. I think we feel pretty good about our 2-deep,” Coach Gill stated. “We got some young guys that haven’t played a lot of football, but we like their talent, we like their skills.”
CB
1. Jeremy Peters (So., 5-10, 180)
Peters broke onto the scene as a true freshman last season, playing in all 11 games and recorded 17 tackles. He showed his playmaking ability as he added a sack and returned an interception for a touchdown. Gill says he feels good about Peters as a starter at one corner, and the team voted him as a captain for the 2016 season. It’s not often that a sophomore, much less, a true sophomore is voted on as a team captain. With the loss of Wesley Scott, the young Peters will be counted on to lead the secondary.
2. Malik Matthews (R-Fr., 5-11, 185)
Matthews redshirted in 2015 as a true freshman, but with Scott’s injury will be counted on as a depth guy. Matthews was the only corner that Coach Gill singled out after the two starters saying he is a guy that has come on pretty strong.
CB
1. Chris Turner (So., 6-3, 175)
Turner was probably the biggest surprise of the 2015 season as he came, virtually out of nowhere, to lead the team with 4 interceptions. He also found himself on SportsCenter’s Top 10 plays with an acrobatic interception he made in the Thursday night game against Coastal Carolina. With his length, his potential is off the charts.
2. Tyrin Holloway (Jr., 6-0, 190)
The veteran of the group, Holloway has seen playing time in 25 games while starting 11 during his career. He has one interception in each of his first 2 seasons.
NICKEL
1. Jeremy Peters (So., 5-10, 180)
2. Rion Davis (R-Fr., 6-0, 185)
Stay tuned for our safety analysis for our breakdown of Davis as he is also listed on the depth chart at the SPUR safety spot.
