In a Monday virtual meeting with the media, Liberty head football coach Hugh Freeze announced Elisha Mitchell and Isaac Steele have opted out of the 2020 season due to concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic.
Mitchell is a senior defensive tackle who was expected to fill in some depth on the interior of the defensive line. The 6’3″, 310 pound lineman is originally from Virginia Beach, Virginia where he attended Bayside High School. He played in 11 games in 2019, finishing the season with 9 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, a QB hurry and 0.5 sacks.
Steele is a redshirt-senior from Phoenix, Arizona. He transferred to Liberty after one season at Mesa Community College. He started 11 games in 2018, finishing third on the team with 65 tackles and 3 interceptions. Last season, Steele fought through injuries while playing in 10 games and starting 3. He finished the season with 24 tackles.
Liberty is scheduled to open the season on Sept. 19 at Western Kentucky.
