Liberty is on the cusp of numerous school and Big South records, none of which are flattering. With the Flames currently sitting at 6-16 overall and 0-9 in Big South play. Here’s a look at a few records that are in jeopardy:
Team
- Most consecutive losses. Record = 20 in 1977-78. Current = 9.
- Most losses in a season. Record = 25 in 2001-02. Current = 16.
- Most consecutive regular season Big South losses. Record = 13 from 1998-2000. Current = 10.
- Most consecutive Big South losses (including BSC Tourney). Record = 13 from 1998-2000. Current = 11.
- Most conference losses in a season. Record = 13 from 2005-06. Current = 9.
- Fewest conference wins in a season. Record = 0 in 1998-99. Current = 0.
- Not really a record, but interesting to note nonetheless, Liberty has had at least 1 player on either the 1st or 2nd All-Big South teams every year since the Flames joined the Big South in 1991-92 except for the last 2 seasons. Unless something drastic changes over the last month of the season, no one will be named to either the 1st or 2nd All-Big South teams this year either.
Big South
- Teams to finish regular season winless in conference play – Liberty 0-10 in 1998-99, Radford 0-16 in 2010-11*
- Most conference losses in one season – 16 by Presbyterian in 2009-10**, Radford in 2010-11*, and Radford in 2011-12
*Radford had 2 conference wins in 2010-11 vacated due to NCAA rules violations. So they actually finished that season 2-14, but had 2 wins vacated after the fact.
** Presbyterian was a transitional Division I team in 2009-10 and not eligible for the Big South championship.
Liberty lost 13 in a row to finish the ’76-’77 season.
Thank you! It carried over into the following season for a cumulative losing streak of 20. I was going by the Liberty record book which stated the longest losing streak was 11 games. Thank you for the correction.
