After winning the ASUN automatic bid this weekend, the Liberty Flames earned a 3-seed in the Chapel Hill Regional. The Flames will face the Region’s 2-seed Tennessee on Friday night at 7pm. North Carolina is the 1-seed and the number 14 national seed. The Tar Heels will face 4-seed UNC Wilmington on Friday.
It’s Liberty’s 6th NCAA Tournament appearance, first since 2014, and the Flames will be looking to advance to the program’s first ever Super Regionals.
The winner of the Chapel Hill Regional will face the winner of the Georgia Tech Regional in Super Regional action.
This will not be the Flames’ first trip to Chapel Hill this season, as Liberty also made the trip on April 30th when LU fell to UNC, 11-5. Liberty defeated North Carolina, 2-0, in a game played in Lynchburg on March 19th.
The Flames have also played Tennessee once this season, losing to the Volunteers, 7-1, in Knoxville on February 26th.
Scott Jackson will be making his return to North Carolina where he was an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator for 8 seasons prior to becoming Liberty’s head coach. Jackson and the Tar Heels made three College World Series appearances while he was on staff (2009, 2011, 2013). He was also an assistant at UNC Wilmington from 2003-2007, advancing to NCAA Regional play in 2003, 2004, and 2006..
Liberty is the only team from the commonwealth of Virginia to reach the 2019 NCAA Tournament.
