Liberty football moved into both of the national FCS Top 25 polls this week following their 16-0 win at Presbyterian on Saturday. It’s the first time the Flames have been ranked this season, and the first national ranking since Turner Gill’s squad fell to Monmouth on October 17th last year.
Gill’s Flames check in at #25 in the STATS FCS Top 25 and #24 in the FCS Coaches’ Poll. Liberty is 6-1 against FCS competition this year with the only loss coming against #2 Jacksonville State.
Winners of 5 straight, Liberty clinched at least a share of its record eighth Big South Conference championship this past Saturday. So far this season, Liberty (6-3, 4-0) has played in the shadow of defending Big South champion Charleston Southern. With the Buccaneers conference loss to Gardner-Webb this past weekend, the Flames can clinch the conference’s automatic bid to the FCS playoffs by defeating Charleston Southern at home Saturday in Lynchburg, Virginia. CSU fell to #14 in both the STATS FCS Top 25 and the FCS Coaches’ Poll. Under Gill, the Flames are 7-8 against FCS top 25 teams and 3-1 when Liberty is also ranked.
