COASTAL CAROLINA WINS THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
Coastal Carolina not only advanced to the College World Series, but won college baseball’s national championship. The Chanticleers eliminated several household names during their run including NC State, LSU, Florida, TCU, Texas Tech, and Arizona. This is obviously the biggest achievement for any Big South team in any sport, and, fittingly, today is Coastal’s first day as a member of the Sun Belt.
JIM TOMAN RESIGNS
On June 24th, Liberty announced that head coach Jim Toman had resigned to pursue other opportunities. Toman, the 2nd winningest coach in Liberty history, went 329-205-1 during his 9 year sting while guiding the Flames to 2 NCAA Regional appearances and 1 Big South title.
BASEBALL COACHING NAMES TO WATCH
Since the announcement of Toman’s resignation, rumors have begun swirling around potential replacements. Earlier this week we posted a list of 7 names to watch during the search. Since then, Craig Gibson, Mercer’s current head coach, has certainly gained some steam. We’ve been able to confirm that there have in fact been discussions between him and Jeff Barber. Shawn Stiffler is another name we’ve been able to confirm is worth keeping an eye on. Stiffler is currently the head coach at VCU.
GIELO TO PLAY IN SUMMER LEAGUE WITH 76ERS
Tomasz Gielo will be playing for the Philadelphia 76ers in the Salt Lake Summer League, July 4-7. Gielo, who transferred to Ole Miss for his senior season last year, had a workout with the 76ers, as well as other teams, a couple of weeks ago. Many of the Summer League games are televised on NBA TV.
SETH CURRY BACK ON CAMPUS
Former Liberty guard Seth Curry was back on campus last weekend as he spoke to high school students as part of Liberty’s team camp. While he was on campus, he also spoke to and worked out with the Liberty basketball team. Curry was initially recruited by Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay to Liberty during McKay’s first stint as Flames head coach. Seth, the younger brother of NBA MVP Stephen Curry, spent his freshman season with the Flames and McKay before transferring to Duke for the remainder of his collegiate career. In his one season at Liberty, Curry averaged 20.2 points per game and was named the Big South’s freshman of the year.
