Liberty adds to its 2022 roster with a commitment from former Virginia Tech signee Rashaud Pernell, according to sources.
After signing with the Hokies in December 2021, Pernell announced on his social media accounts less than a month ago that he would be backing out of his decision to head to Blacksburg and re-opening his recruitment. Pernell, a 6’4″, 250 pound defensive lineman played his high school football at Highland Springs High School just outside of Richmond, Virginia.
Liberty was firmly in the mix for Pernell before he committed to and signed with Virginia Tech. The Flames made the cut into his top seven alongside the Hokies, Virginia, Wake Forest, Minnesota, Coastal Carolina, and Howard.
Pernell was a three-star rated prospect out of high school with offers from Liberty, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Buffalo, Coastal Carolina, East Carolina, Louisville, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pitt, Virginia, Wake Forest, and others. 247Sports rated Pernell as the 17th best prospect in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Pernell will be able to enroll at Liberty this summer and take part of training camp in Lynchburg ahead of the 2022 season. He will have four years of eligibility. Virginia Tech and new head coach Brent Pry has let Pernell out of the letter of intent he signed in December, the Roanoke Times has reported.
