With the newly expanded College Football Playoff to 12 teams and the top 5 ranked conference champions getting automatic bids, it means that the highest ranked Group of Five conference champion will be included in this year’s CFP.
With Liberty one of the favorites to contend for this spot, we will be providing a weekly CFP Watch and power rankings of the top five teams in consideration for this G5 spot for as long as the Flames are in contention.
Here are our G5 CFP Power Rankings following Week 6:
Liberty (5-0, 3-0 CUSA)
Last week: Bye
The Flames fall just outside the top five of this week’s power rankings. They need to continue to win and start to win with some style points. Liberty has two more midweek, national TV spots before the CUSA schedule flips back to Saturdays.
Next game: Wednesday, October 23 @ Kennesaw State, 7 p.m., CBS Sports Network
5. Louisiana (5-1, 2-0 Sun Belt)
Last week: W, 34-24 vs Appalachian State
The Ragin Cajuns have been a surprise team in the Sun Belt so far this season. They currently own a P4 win by defeating Wake Forest with their lone loss coming by eight points against Tulane. If they were to run the table the rest of the way, they would be right in the mix for a CFP spot.
Next game: Saturday, October 19 @ Coastal Carolina, 12 Noon, ESPNU
4. UNLV (5-1, 2-0 Mountain West)
Last week: W, 50-34 @ Utah State
The Rebels bounced back from their first setback of the season with a win over Utah State on the road. They have a couple of tough tests coming up with a road trip to Oregon State this week before the huge Mountain West showdown with Boise State. If UNLV can somehow squeak by with a couple wins the next two games they might vault right back to the top of these power rankings.
Next game: Saturday, October 19 @ Oregon State, 10 p.m., CW
3. Navy (5-0, 3-0 American)
Last week: Bye
The Midshipmen are coming off an open date and will return to the field on Saturday against Charlotte.
Next game: Saturday, October 19 vs Charlotte, 3:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network
2. Army (6-0, 5-0 American)
Last week: W, 44-10 vs UAB
The Black Knights are just rolling along in their first year in the American. What would they need to do to take over Boise State?
Next game: Saturday, October 19 vs East Carolina, 12 noon, ESPN2
1. Boise State (5-1, 2-0 Mountain West)
Last week: W, 28-7 @ Hawaii
The Broncos continue to roll and their one loss, a close setback at Oregon, continues to look better and better. Huge test for Boise State in the Mountain West coming up at UNLV on Oct. 25 after an open date.
Next game: Friday, October 25 @ UNLV, 10:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network
