It is official now, the Flames are headed to the Lending Tree Bowl to take on Eastern Michigan on Saturday, December 18. Liberty’s 2021 schedule ended up featuring seven teams that advanced to a bowl game.
The Flames finished the regular season with a 4-3 record against those bowl teams. Liberty started 4-0 with wins over Old Dominion, UAB, Middle Tennessee, and North Texas before dropping three straight against eventual bowl teams to close out the regular season against Ole Miss, Louisiana, and Army.
Here’s a look at where those seven teams will be playing this bowl season:
- #8 Ole Miss (10-2) is headed to the Sugar Bowl to play #7 Baylor on Jan. 2
- #23 Louisiana (11-1) will play Marshall in the New Orleans Bowl on Dec. 18
- Army (8-3) will play Missouri in the Armed Forces Bowl on Dec. 22
- Old Dominion (6-6) will play Tulsa in the Myrtle Beach Bowl on Dec. 20
- UAB (8-4) will play BYU in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 18
- North Texas (6-6) will play Miami (OH) in the newly created Frisco Football Classic on Dec. 23
- Middle Tennesse (6-6) will play Toledo in the Bahamas Bowl on Dec. 17
The seven bowl teams faced in one regular season is by far the most Liberty has ever played in one year. Last year, the Flames were 1-1 against bowl teams. In the Flames’ first season as a full FBS member in 2019, Liberty played four bowl teams (Louisiana, Buffalo, BYU, and Virginia), going 1-3 in those games. In 2018, the Flames were 1-4 against bowl teams. Liberty is now 7-11 against bowl teams with 2021 being the first season the Flames posted a winning record in those games.
