Ever since arriving at Liberty, many have questioned when head football coach Hugh Freeze would leave and move on to a Power Five job. He has repeatedly voiced his support for his current position at Liberty, and he echoed that sentiment on Wednesday when asked about possible job openings.
“I’m very happy right here on the Mountain,” he said. “They have been so good to me. I think we can win a lot of conference championships here. It’s like I’ve said before, if I ever decide that I am interested in something else, my players will be the first to know, but that has not been the case for three years and it hasn’t been the case this year either thus far.”
Freeze was linked to the open Texas Tech job in recent weeks before the Red Raiders hired Joey McGuire who was the associate head coach at Baylor. Freeze shot down that rumor saying, “I was never in the mix at Texas Tech. I don’t know where that came from.”
There have also been rumors that Freeze could be a top target for jobs that aren’t open yet such as Virginia Tech, Florida, or even returning to his former home at Ole Miss.
“I don’t give any credence whatsoever to jobs that aren’t open,” Freeze stated. “That’s not wise for media or anyone to speculate on that. That’s not fair to the people that have those jobs.”
Freeze is 25-9 in his nearly three full seasons at Liberty. He has guided the program to its first ever bowl games, winning the 2019 and 2020 Cure Bowl. Freeze and the Flames finished the 2020 season with a 10-1 mark and were ranked No. 17 in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll. Liberty picked up its first ever wins over ACC programs last season by beating Syracuse and Virginia Tech.
“I’m very happy here,” said Freeze. “I tell (Liberty AD) Ian (McCaw) that all the time. He is an incredible boss to work for as is his administration. Great kids to coach here and my family’s quality of life is as good as it’s ever been.”
Liberty and Freeze have an open date this week following the team’s 27-14 loss at No. 15 Ole Miss this past Saturday. The Flames are 7-3 on the season, becoming bowl eligible for a third straight season. Liberty will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 20 against No. 24 Louisiana in a game that is scheduled to kickoff at 4 p.m. on ESPNU. Liberty will conclude its regular season on Nov. 27 with it’s final home game of the season against Army.
