Jack Curtis, who was serving as Liberty’s Co-Defensive Coordinator and safeties coach, is no longer on staff with the Flames, ASOR has been able to confirm. His name is no longer listed on the Liberty football coaching staff online.
Curtis had been on staff at Liberty since January 2021 when he was hired by previous head coach Hugh Freeze as the team’s safeties coach. He replaced Corey Batoon who held that position for the 2020 season under Coach Freeze. In December 2021, Curtis was promoted to Co-Defensive Coordinator while maintaining his role as safeties coach after Scott Symons took the defensive coordinator role at SMU. He was Co-DC alongside Liberty defensive line coach Josh Aldridge.
Curtis was the only on-field position coach from the 2022 season to remain on staff at Liberty following the coaching change as Jamey Chadwell was named head coach in December. Curtis was retained in the same position he held for the 2022 season at Co-Defensive Coordinator and safeties coach.
Prior to arriving at Liberty, Curtis spent five seasons as Tulane’s defensive coordinator, and prior to that spent five seasons as Georgia Southern’s defensive coordinator. He is originally from Birmingham, Alabama and has coaching experience at Mississippi State, Northwestern State, Arkansas State, Memphis, and Central Missouri, as well.
Curtis has served as defensive coordinator at Northwestern State, Arkansas State, and Central Missouri, in addition to his previous two stops. He’s coached defensive backs and/or safeties at all of his stops.
The Flames are now looking for a new safeties coach, and it is not entirely sure if there will be a Co-Defensive Coordinator on the staff, a position that Curtis also held, or if defensive line coach Skylor Magee will assume the role of Defensive Coordinator solely. Magee is currently Co-Defensive Coordinator in addition to his duties as position coach of the defensive line.
