The Jacksonville State Gamecocks will host the Liberty Flames in Jacksonville, Alabama this Tuesday.
The Flames and Gamecocks will showdown at Burgess–Snow Field at JSU Stadium in Jacksonville, Alabama on Oct. 10th at 7:30PM Eastern Time. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU and LFSN Radio (The Journey 88.3 FM).
Burgess–Snow Field at JSU Stadium was opened in 1947 and has a capacity of 24,000. The Stadium’s record attendance was set in 2017 when 23,944 fans went to see the Flames faceoff against the Gamecocks. The Flames lost that game, 31-10.
The Gamecocks are 5-1 on the season, tying the Flames as the only Conference USA teams with five wins. Jacksonville State’s one loss was in week three at Jamey Chadwell’s former school, Coastal Carolina. The Gamecocks lost 30-16.
This is the Gamecocks’ premier season of FBS football. They finished last season with a 9-2 record without any post-season play as they were ineligible for the FCS Playoffs due to their transition to the FBS.
Head coach Rich Rodriguez is in his second season with the Gamecocks. Rodriguez is 14-3 with the team. Rodriguez started his coaching career in 1985 at West Virginia. Rodriguez has coached for ten different teams over the years, having stints as head coach at West Virginia, Michigan, and Arizona.
The Gamecocks have set up a Quarterback rotation on offense, giving both Logan Smothers and Zion Webb playing time. Smothers has thrown for 523 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 240 yards and five touchdowns. Webb has thrown for 403 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 186 yards and one touchdown.
The Gamecocks have averaged 396 yards on offense through five games this season. In contrast, the Flames have averaged 490 yards of offense per game. The Gamecocks’ defense has forced 15 turnovers this season, two more than the Flames defense.
Jacksonville State is currently tied with the Flames for first place in Conference USA, being one of three teams with no conference losses, as the two teams are both 3-0 in league play.
Three Players to Watch For
RB #5 – Malik Jackson is a senior with the Gamecocks. Jackson has rushed 98 times for 559 yards and four touchdowns. He leads CUSA in rushing yards. Jackson has also hauled in twelve receptions for 64 yards.
DL #91 – Chris Hardie has recorded 35 total tackles, 21 solo tackles, 3.5 sacks, and one pass defense through five games this season. Hardie also caught an interception which he returned for 58 yards last week against Middle Tennessee.
S #25 – Fred Perry has claimed 37 total tackles, 26 solo tackles, two forced fumbles, and two pass defenses already this season.
