New Liberty head football coach Jamey Chadwell has announced the hiring of nine of his 10 on field coaches for the 2023 season, as well as the program’s new Director of Football Speed, Strength, and Conditioning. The only position coach not yet to be filled is defensive backs coach.

As first reported by ASOR, several assistants from Chadwell’s Coastal Carolina staff will follow him to Lynchburg. This includes Willy Korn (QBs) and Newland Isaac (RBs) who will be co-offensive coordinators as they have been with the Chanticleers.

Korn, who has been Coastal’s Quarterbacks Coach and Co-Offensive Coordinator, has spent his entire coaching career under the leadership Chadwell. He was the wide receivers coach at Charleston Southern in 2013, remaining at the Big South program until 2017 when he made the move with Chadwell to Coastal Carolina as wide receivers coach and also handling the kickoff coverage duties. Korn was promoted to co-offensive coordinator and reassigned to quarterbacks coach in 2019 following the promotion of Chadwell to head coach.

Isaac has been the Co-Offensive Coordinator and Running Backs Coach at Coastal since 2019. He also spent the 2018 season with the Chanticleers as running backs coach before being promoted to co-offensive coordinator the following season. Isaac began his coaching career at North Greenville, where he coached the running backs and slot receivers from 2009-2011.

Skylor Magee will also follow Chadwell to Lynchburg as defensive line coach. He will also be Co-Defensive Coordinator alongside Jack Curtis who will remain in the same position he held for the 2022 season with the Flames Co-DC and safeties coach.

Magee was a defensive lineman at Southern Miss where he was a Freshman All-American in 2001. Following his playing career, Magee began his time coaching in 2005 under Steve Spurrier at South Carolina as a grad assistant. He then was the defensive line coach at Nicholls State from 2006-2008. He joined Coach Chadwell at North Greenville in 2009 as co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach.

From 2010-2012, Magee coached the defensive line at a high school in Mississippi. He returned to the collegiate ranks in 2012, coaching the defensive line at Delta State. From 2013-2016, Magee led Charleston Southern’s defensive line, and then was the defensive line coach at Georgia State in 2017 and 2018 before joining Chadwell at Coastal Carolina in 2019 where he has been the defensive line coach.

Prior to his time at Liberty the past two seasons, Curtis spent the prior five seasons as Tulane’s defensive coordinator, and prior to that spent five seasons as Georgia Southern’s defensive coordinator. He is originally from Birmingham, Alabama and has coaching experience at Mississippi State, Northwestern State, Arkansas State, Memphis, and Central Missouri, as well.

Curtis has served as defensive coordinator at Northwestern State, Arkansas State, and Central Missouri, in addition to his previous two stops. He’s coached defensive backs and/or safeties at all of his stops.

Former West Virginia wide receivers coach Tony Washington will be Liberty’s new wide receivers coach and Kyle Krantz is the Special Teams Coordinator and Outside Linebackers Coach, coming to Liberty from Missouri. Both of these hires have been previously announced.

Washington previously worked under new Liberty head coach Jamey Chadwell as the wide receivers coach at Coastal Carolina in 2020 and 2021. Washington joined West Virginia and head coach Neal Brown this past February. Now, he reunites with his former boss in Lynchburg.

Prior to his time at Coastal, Washington was a grad assistant at Louisville in 2019 and a quality control coach at East Carolina in 2018. Originally from High Point, North Carolina, Washington was an undrafted free agent out of Appalachian State, signing with the Indianapolis Colts in 2014. He spent time in the NFL from 2014-2017 with the Colts, Jacksonville Jaguars, and New England Patriots.

Krantz is currently a special teams analyst for the Missouri Tigers. He has experience as a special teams coordinator, previously working in those roles at South Carolina and Washington State. This is the first hire that has become public since Jamey Chadwell was named head coach at Liberty.

Other assistants moving from Coastal Carolina to Liberty include Bill Durkin (OL) and Cody Ladutko. Durkin has been at Coastal since the 2014 season as an assistant coach, primarily working with the offensive line and tight ends. His previous stints includes offensive line coach at Bowling Green, Hofstra, and Richmond.

2022 was the first season Ladutko coached the tight ends at Coastal, previously serving in various roles with the Chanticleers such as offensive analyst, quality control, and graduate assistant dating back to the 2018 season. He began his coaching career at Davidson, coaching the wide receivers from 2014-17.

Robert Bala will also remain at Liberty, being promoted from defensive analyst to linebackers coach. Bala joined the Flames for the 2022 season. Prior to his time in Lynchburg, he was at Southern Utah dating back to the 2018 season. In addition to coaching the corners, safeties, and linebackers, Bala was also the defensive coordinator at SUU beginning in 2020.

Chad Scott has been named Liberty’s Director of Football Speed, Strength, and Conditioning. Scott has been in the same position at Coastal Carolina since 2019 and was the head strength and conditioning coach at Charleston Southern the six years prior. He spent five years at Eastern Kentucky as the assistant strength and conditioning coach.

According to sources, Colton Korn is also expected to move from Coastal Carolina to Liberty, joining the Flames in an off field position as Director of Player Personnel. He is the brother of Willy Korn and has also worked at Charleston Southern and the Citadel.
