Coming into the 2012 football season, the Liberty coaching staff was building up freshman kicker John Lunsford. Coaches do not typically hype a freshman before they begin playing so most of Flames Nation wondered just how good Lunsford was. Here are his stats thus far:
- 8/11 FGs
- 13/13 Extra Points
- Long of 50 yards
- 4/6 on FGs longer than 40 yards
- 58% of his kickoffs are touchbacks (from the 35 yard line)
Compare this to Liberty all-time great kicker Matt Bevins’ freshman stats:
- 12/16 FGs
- 20/21 Extra Points
- Long of 44 yards
- 2/4 on FGs longer than 40 yards
- 3% of his kickoffs are touchbacks (from the 30 yard line)
Clearly Lunsford is having a freshman campaign that puts him on target to go down as Liberty’s best kicker in school history.
Woah there Cowboy. It’s early and Bev was amazing. He’s got the potential for sure, but we shall see. My son is convinced we will see a 60+ YDR from Lunsford.
Just saying he has the potential. Sure he’s got a ways to go, but the potential is clearly there.
