Liberty junior guard Keegan McDowell will transfer from the program, head coach Ritchie McKay announced Friday evening following Liberty’s season opening win over Radford.
“Keegan has decided to transfer,” said McKay. “We’re going to do it probably a little differently and it will be up to Keegan when he wants to speak to the media. He wants an opportunity to play more. He let the team know before the game. It was tough, it was emotional, I was worried about it. Maybe I wish the circumstances were different, but I’m going to honor him for what he has done for us the past two plus years.”
McDowell is a 6’6″ guard from Cincinnati, Ohio and Moeller High School. He played in 68 career games including 37 last year with a career average of 3.3 points while shooting 37.1% from 3.
“I think in most programs you say, ‘Ok, turn in your stuff,'” said McKay. “But he’s such a fabulous kid, and he’s labored hard to get our program to where it is now. Although I’m disappointed that he’s not going to play on our team, he’s still on our team. He’s going to practice, he’s going to do everything but play in games. We haven’t talked about whether or not he will travel, we will work that out, but he’s still a valuable part.
