Former Liberty cornerback Kevin Fogg was signed to an undrafted free agent contract with the Miami Dolphins this summer where he is currently competing for a spot on the Dolphins’ 53-man roster. On August 8th, the rookie got his first opportunity to play in an NFL game when the Dolphins faced the Atlanta Falcons in the Georgia Dome. Not only was it his first time he played in an NFL game, it was the first NFL game he has ever attended.
It was “definitely an experience,” Fogg said, describing the atmosphere. “This is the big leagues. When I first got in the game though, all my nerves were gone. Football is football.” During the game, he recorded 3 tackles and returned 1 punt for 13 yards. “Every time I wake up, I thank God. Sometimes, I think I’m dreaming,” Fogg continued as he went on to describe how his summer has been. “I’m enjoying it.”
He’s not alone in Miami. The Dolphins selected former Liberty cornerback and teammate of Fogg’s at Liberty, Walt Aikens, in the 4th round. It “definitely helps” having someone you know in camp, Kevin said addressing Aikens. The Dolphin pair are two of six Liberty alumni currently in NFL training camps.
Fogg discussed some of his personal goals during camp, “self-improvement, getting better each and every day.” He continued by saying “to make the 53-man roster” is his ultimate goal. Being signed as undrafted free agent, the odds are stacked against him when it comes to making the 53-man roster, but it happens every year. On average, every NFL team has 13 players on their active rosters who were originally signed as undrafted free agents.
One of his biggest takeaways from his time at Liberty is they help you “know who you are in Christ.” Fogg singled out Coach Marshall Roberts, his position coach while at Liberty, as continually stressing to “work hard for everything” and “always aim (to compete) at your highest level.”
Fogg gets his next opportunity to compete at the highest level in an NFL game Saturday night when the Dolphins travel to Tampa to face the Buccaneers. Surely, he will be thinking of another adage he learned while at Liberty: “you’re here for a reason.”
