Liberty head coach Ritchie McKay has announced the addition of Larry Mangino to his basketball staff.
Mangino comes to the Flames from the University of Virginia where he has been for the past eight years, including the past three seasons as Director of Player Development. Mangino takes over a spot on the staff left vacated by Rob Jones who was recently named the head coach at Cedarville.
Mangino is the father of Liberty Assistant Athletics Director and Chief of Staff Chelsea Mangino.
Prior to his time at Virginia, Larry Mangino was an assistant coach at SMU. He also spent two seasons as a player development coach for the Denver Nuggets. Mangino also served as an assistant coach at the Air Force and held head coaching stints at Clark University and Ferrum College. In total, Mangino has been coaching at the college and NBA level for 36 years.
Mangino joins a staff that includes Derek Johnston, Joe Pierre III, Zach Farquhar, Sam Thomas, Luke McKay, Stephen Burggraf and Chris Rogers.
“I love our staff,” head coach Ritchie McKay said. “I think being able to have continuity is really important. It helps build your program and grow it, but also I want our guys to be guys that have a chance to go and plant some churches elsewhere. I’m never too disenchanted when we have a staff change because I think it’s God moving them into another level of authority and influence.”
