Pack your bags, the Liberty Flames are going bowling!

On Sunday, Liberty officially accepted an invitation to the Cure Bowl, marking the first ever bowl game for the program. The 7-5 Flames will face Georgia Southern out of the Sun Belt.

Liberty and the Georgia Southern Eagles will face off at 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 21 in Orlando at Exploria Stadium, home of the MLS’ Orlando City SC.

The Flames finished 7-5 overall under first year head coach Hugh Freeze after defeating New Mexico State in the regular season finale to become bowl eligible for the first time in school history. Georgia Southern is also 7-5 and was 5-3 in the Sun Belt’s East Division.

The Eagles are coming off a 38-10 win over Georgia State last Saturday. They faced three similar opponents as the Flames, beating Maine 26-18 (Liberty won 59-44) and New Mexico State 41-7 (Liberty won 20-13 and 49-28)and losing to Louisiana 37-24 (Liberty lost 35-14).

Liberty is 0-3 against Georgia Southern, with the last meeting coming on November 16, 1996 in Statesboro, Georgia. The Flames lost that game 45-14. Liberty also lost on November 11, 1995, 7-6, and September 29, 1984 in Statesboro, 48-11.

Georgia Southern is 2-0 all-time in bowl games, including a 23-21 win over Eastern Michigan last year in the Camellia Bowl. The Eagles first ever bowl game was in the 2015 GoDaddy Bowl where they defeated Bowling Green, 58-27.
