Since joining Conference USA in November, Liberty has begun the arduous process of reducing its future football games to make room for eight conference games beginning with the 2023 schedule. However, prior to Liberty officially joining CUSA, the Flames added a future home and home series with Ball State.
According to a copy of the contract that was signed by each party in September 2021, Liberty will host Ball State on September 21, 2030 and travel to Muncie, Indiana on September 20, 2031. Liberty will play Ball State $250,000 for the game at Liberty while Ball State will pay the Flames $350,000 for the game at Ball State.
This adds to a previously announced home and home series between the two FBS programs with Liberty scheduled to host Ball State on September 21, 2024 and travel to Indiana on October 3, 2026. These two programs have only met once previoiusly, with Liberty defeating the Cardinals, 27-23, on Sept. 11, 2010 when the Flames were still competing at the FCS level.
In recent weeks since joining CUSA, Liberty has had games against Miami (Ohio) and Virginia canceled. With Liberty’s move to the Conference USA beginning with the 2023 season, the Flameswill continue to purge future games from schedules. Liberty has to move from 12 games in some seasons to just four non-conference games beginning with the 2023 season.
