Liberty has added VMI to the 2028 football schedule, according to a copy of the contract received by ASOR.

The Flames are scheduled to take on the Keydets on Sept. 9, 2028. Liberty will play the FCS member a guarantee of $450,000 for the game.

Provided no other changes to the non-conference schedule for the 2028 season, this should complete the Flames’ slate that year. Liberty is scheduled to open that campaign on Sept. 2 at Virginia Tech before opening the home schedule at Williams Stadium against VMI. The Flames are also scheduled to play at Bowling Green on Sept. 23 and host Coastal Carolina on Oct. 14 in addition to the 8 Conference USA games.

Liberty and the Virginia Military Institute are located less than 50 miles away from one another. The former Big South rivals have met 12 times previously with the Flames holding a 9-3 series advantage. The most recent meeting came during the 2013 season when Liberty defeated VMI, 17-7, in a game played in Lynchburg.

The Keydets are currently members of the SOCON in the FCS. They are currently 1-2 this season and have played one FBS member, losing to NC State, 45-7.

VMI is currently led by first year head coach Danny Rocco. The long time FCS head coach, Rocco got his first head coaching stint at Liberty. He guided the Flames from 2006-2011, leading the program to a 47-20 overall record and 4 Big South Championships in his 6 seasons at the helm. Since 2011, Rocco has served as the head coach at Richmond and Delaware before taking over at VMI this year.
