On Friday, Liberty Athletics announced the launch of #CreatedEqually initiative to unite the athletic department and Flames Nation around a shared commitment of love, equality and unity, according to a release.
The #CreatedEqually campaign is based upon Acts 17:26, “From one man he made all the nations, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he marked out their appointed times in history and the boundaries of their lands.”
The initiative is “an effort to make positive social changes that honor God and represent the mission of Liberty University.”
As part of this initiative, Liberty student-athletes will wear #CreatedEqually decals and patches on their uniforms, beginning with a helmet decal on the football team’s helmets for the season opener at Western Kentucky on Saturday. Here’s a look at that decal (photo courtesy @LibertyFootball):
“Liberty Athletics stands alongside our coaches, staff and student-athletes in advocating for positive social change in a manner that conveys love, equality and unity,” Liberty Athletic Director Ian McCaw stated. “The second greatest commandment is to love one another and that includes treating each person with honor, dignity and respect.”
Under the direction of Liberty Associate AD for Student Engagement and Development Butch Jefferson, Liberty’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has initiated a social media campaign with the theme of “Listen, Learn and Love.” Liberty’s SAAC upcoming efforts will include voter education, mental health instruction and programming committed to ensuring Liberty Athletics is a place where people from all backgrounds feel valued and comfortable.
“If you love others the way Christ loves the church and you focus on that as your founding principle, everything else will take care of itself,” Jefferson stated. “I am so proud of the work our SAAC group is putting into these projects and coming together as a family to make this happen.”
