According to Mike Farrell of Rivals, Liberty is one of the first to check in with former Clemson running back and 247Sports four-star recruit Chez Mellusi. Mellusi entered his name into the transfer portal earlier this week after spending two years with the Tigers.
The 5’11”, 200 pound back is originally from Naples, Florida where he rushed for more than 3,900 yards and 50 touchdowns. Mellusi was expected to be in contention for the Tigers’ starting running back slot for the 2021 season following the departure of Travis Etienne. Mellusi had five carries in Clemson’s spring game on April 3.
Mellusi signed with Clemson in 2019 and was set to be the second-leading returning rusher on the team. Playing in 22 games over the past two years, he had 71 carries for 427 yards and six touchdowns to go along with five receptions for 38 yards and another score while playing in 169 career snaps. He scored two touchdowns last season in a Clemson win over Pitt, rushing five times for 27 yards and a score while catching two passes for eight yards including another touchdown.
Farrell mentioned Liberty, Purdue, Wisconsin, UCF, Louisville, and Vanderbilt as are pursuing Mellusi. Liberty returns top running back Joshua Mack as well as speedster Shedro Louis and adds Utah transfer running back TJ Green.
