Liberty forward Owen Aquino has entered the transfer portal. Aquino is the fifth Liberty player to enter the transfer portal since it officially opened last week as he joins Curtis Blair, Bryson Spell, Kai Yu, and Will Gibson.
Aquino is a 6’8″ forward who spent the past season at Liberty after coming to Lynchburg from the JUCO ranks where he played at Eastern Florida State College for two years. This past year for Liberty, Aquino started all 35 games while averaging 8.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game while shooting 58.3% from the field. He also led the team with 1.1 blocks per game while helping lead the Flames to a 28-7 season including a CUSA regular season and tournament title while advancing to the program’s 7th NCAA Tournament. He scored a season-high 28 points in a win over North Carolina A&T on Dec. 14 and posted five double-doubles on the season.
Aquino is from Madrid, Spain. While at Eastern Florida State in Cocoa, Florida, he was named a NJCAA Division I All-American first-team selection and the FCSAA Citrus Conference Player of the Year after averaging 14.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game.
The transfer portal for men’s basketball remains open until April 22. As the roster is currently constructed, the Flames have four open roster spots for next season’s team. That is assuming that Taelon Peter and Jayvon Maughmer do not return, which is not a guarantee as they could look to the NCAA for an additional year of eligibility. If they do return, Liberty would have just two roster spots available to add to next year’s team from the transfer portal.
