Liberty has had a very successful football run dating back to the 2006 season when Danny Rocco was hired. In 2005, the Flames were coming off a 1-10 season under former head coach Ken Karcher. Rocco, then an assistant at Virginia, was hired to take over and things have been trending upwards ever since.
Liberty is one of just nine Division I football programs with six or more wins every season dating back to 2006. Of those nine teams, Liberty is one of just seven current FBS programs to have accomplished the feat, and one of only three current FBS teams without a losing record during that time. Several teams saw their streaks that dated to at least 2006 come to an end in 2020 with shortened seasons amid the COVID pandemic.
