Liberty is one of just seven Group of Five members to play three or more Power Five opponents in 2020.
The Flames are scheduled to face Virginia Tech, Syracuse, and NC State this fall. This is the second straight season Liberty has scheduled at least three P5 opponents, as the Flames faced Syracuse, Rutgers, Virginia, and BYU who is universally accepted as a P5 opponent despite being an Independent.
There are a total of 60 G5 programs playing college football. UConn, Colorado State, Hawaii, Kent State, Northern Illinois, and Utah State are the other G5 teams playing at least 3 P5 opponents in 2020.
UConn, a brand new Independent program in 2020, leads the way in playing five Power 5 opponents. The Huskies face Illinois, Virginia, Indiana, Ole Miss, and North Carolina. UConn currently has four P5 opponents scheduled for both 2022 and 2023.
Liberty’s only win against a P5 opponent in school history came in 2017 when the Flames defeated Baylor.
