PREVIEW

This is the first game of a two-game road trip for the Flames, and it may be the toughest road trip remaining on the schedule as the Flames face Jacksonville prior to North Alabama on Saturday, both are fighting for a first round home game in next month’s ASUN Tournament.

Jacksonville has won 3 out of 4 games to move out of 8th place in the ASUN standings and into the jumbled middle of the pack. This came directly on the heels of a 3-game losing streak against Liberty, North Florida, and Stetson, which, looking back on it, doesn’t look that bad as those three teams are currently at the top of the conference standings.

With a good showing in the 2nd half of conference play, the Dolphins could crack the top 4 in the ASUN and get a first round home game in the conference tournament. The Dolphins have pulled off an overtime win at LIpscomb and a two point home win against North Alabama. Their only loss in the past two weeks came by 2 points against Florida Gulf Coast.

David Bell and Destin Barnes continue to be a formidable tandem for ASUN teams to handle. Bell is averaging a double-double and making a serious case for first-team all-ASUN. The Dolphins have struggled to score though.

In the first matchup this season, Liberty held Jacksonville to a season-low 38 points. The Flames were led by Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz who scored 8 points in the first 9 minutes of the game. Liberty utilized a 13-0 run midway through the opening half as the Dolphins had just 4 points in the opening minutes. Jacksonville didn’t reach double figures until the 5:27 mark of the first half. Darius McGhee would then get hot in the second half as he scored a team-high 14 points thanks to 4-of-8 shooting from behind the arc.

For the Dolphins, David Bell led the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds as Liberty didn’t have much of an answer for the Ohio State transfer. Diante Wood added 13 points, as those two combined to score 29 of the team’s 37 points. Only four players scored in the game for Jacksonville.
