As we first reported, Liberty welcomed former UNLV quarterback Matt Sluka to campus for a visit over the weekend. The Flames have also brought in Texas A&M transfer QB Jaylen Henderson, as well as Coastal Carolina transfer Ethan Vasko and Charlotte transfer Max Brown, as we reported previously.
Liberty is looking for its next quarterback following the departure of Kaidon Salter who is currently in the portal. The Flames have Ryan Burger and Jayden Bradford on the roster who are both expected to play in the upcoming Bahamas Bowl and will be looking to compete for the starting job in 2025.
Henderson was on campus last past week for a visit. He was one of the first portal targets the Flames brought in, as he was on campus with New Mexico State transfer wide receiver Trent Hudson Henderson started the final four games of the 2023 season for the Aggies before suffering an injury to his hand that required surgery. Henderson left campus without committing, but the Flames are still in the mix.
Sluka was on campus over the weekend for a visit. The former UNLV quarterback left the Rebels three games into the season this past year over a NIL dispute. He was able to preserve his year of eligibility and redshirt to have one year of eligibility remaining. Sluka was reportedly promised $100,000 in NIL money to transfer to UNLV from Holy Cross but those payments were reportedly never made. In those three games played at UNLV, Sluka threw for 318 yards and six touchdowns. He was also very capable on the ground, rushing for 253 yards and a touchdown. In his career at Holy Cross, he threw for nearly 6,000 yards and 59 touchdowns while adding 3,579 yards on the ground and 38 rushing touchdowns.
Vasko has two years of eligibility remaining. A dual-threat quarterback, he was Coastal Carolina’s starting quarterback in 2024, throwing for over 2,000 yards and 14 touchdowns with 8 interceptions and a 55% completion percentage while playing in all 12 games. He originally transferred to Coastal from Kansas.
Brown began his career at Florida before transferring to Charlotte in December 2023. He threw for 561 yards and 3 touchdowns in five games for the 49ers this past season. Brown appeared in four games for the Gators in 2023 and was never able to carve out a consistent role for either Florida or Charlotte.
Coach Chadwell said earlier this month he would pursue at least one and potentially two transfer quarterbacks to compete with Ryan Burger and Jayden Bradford.
