During Friday’s media availability, Liberty head football coach Hugh Freeze discussed the team’s response to the COVID-19 team as the Flames prepare for a 2020 season.

“We’ve gone over two weeks without even having to have a test because no one has screened with any symptoms,” he said. “Everyone is out of quarantine. We haven’t had a positive in over three weeks.”

The national media picked up on this story, as ACC teams made public statements about the concerns of Liberty’s lack of testing with games pending against the Flames this fall, including Syracuse and NC State.

On Saturday afternoon Liberty issued a statement addressing these questions:

“Liberty University is following CDC, Commonwealth of Virginia, local health district and campus guidelines and protocols.”

“Liberty has conducted PCR baseline testing for the entire football team bubble and will follow NCAA requirements for testing as well as meet the testing guidelines for competition established by each conference if those are above the NCAA standard.”

“Liberty is contracting with Radeas Labs, located in Wake Forest, N.C., for its in-season testing program. Radeas’ clients include ACC members.”

“In addition, Liberty conducts daily screening of on campus student-athletes.”

Damien Sordelett of the Lynchburg News & Advance reported on Saturday that the entire roster of 107 Liberty football players and 33 staff members are scheduled to be tested again this week.

Liberty quarterback Chris Ferguson tweeted his support of all Liberty has done to ensure the safety of student athletes saying, “Liberty has worked tirelessly to make sure we are kept safe and healthy during this time. Proper precautions have been taken from day 1 and they will continue to be!!!”
