REDHAWKS LOOKING FOR FIRST WIN
Seattle opened their season on the road Wednesday night, falling to Eastern Washington, 93-86. The Redhawks bell behind 14-2 early and were unable to claw their way back in front as they dropped their season opener.
Graduate transfer Matthew Alexander Moncrieffe led the way for Seattle U with 20 points and 11 rebounds in his Redhawk debut. He was joined in double figures by John Christofilis with 17 points and Paris Dawson with 14 points.
Moncrieffe began his college career at Oklahoma State where he spent two seasons, making 30 appearances and seven starts. The 6’8”, 214 pound forward then transferred to Georgia where he made 44 appearances and 30 starts over the past two seasons. He has career averages of 5.4 points and 4.3 rebounds per game. On Wednesday, Moncrieffe had 20 points, 11 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals while shooting 7 of 9 from the field and 6 of 10 from the free throw line.
6’3” guard John Christofilis is a redshirt-junior who averaged 13.7 points per game and shot 43.5% from three in conference play last season for Seattle U. Christofilis was named preseason all-WAC.
STATUS OF KOBE WILLIAMSON UNKNOWN
Kobe Williamson is expected to be one of Seattle’s top players this season. The 5th year senior has played in 124 career games and has 67 starts to his name during his Seattle career. The 6’8”, 245 pound forward from Australia is the Redhawks’ all-time record holder in blocks.
Williams did not play in the season opener against Eastern Washington and his status is currently unknown. Williamson started all 30 games last year for the Redhawks while averaging 9 points and 5.8 rebounds per game to go along with 56 blocks while shooting 44.4% from the field and making 17 of 68 (25.0%) from three.
GOOD TEST FOR FLAMES
This will be a nice step up in competition for the Flames coming off the season opening win against Valparaiso on a neutral floor. Seattle was picked third in the preseason WAC poll behind Grand Canyon and UT Arlington. The Redhawks were the only team other than Grand Canyon to receive a first place vote in the preseason poll.
Seattle is led by fourth year head coach Chris Victor who has led the Redhawks to 20-win seasons in each of his first three years at Seattle U. The Redhawks won the CBI last March, defeating High Point in the championship game, 77-67.
The Redhawks finished last season ranked No. 107 in the final KenPom rankings and are currently ranked No. 139 by KenPom.
