Liberty basketball’s plans for Thanksgiving in 2022 are already set. Triple Crown Sports announced late on Wednesday seven of the eight teams that will participate in the 2022 Men’s Cancun Challenge. Liberty is one of those teams, along with Auburn, Bradley, Northwestern, Purdue Fort Wayne, Southern Miss, and Winthrop.
“Teams all around the country are excited to see these travel events return to the forefront, and it’s no surprise the Cancun Challenge has a solid group of programs already on board,” said event director Sarah Molina.
The tournament, which is currently set for Nov. 22-23 of next season, will take place in a modified ball room of the Hard Rock Hotel Rivera Maya. Host sites within the U.S. will also be used in the challenge.
This will be Liberty’s second appearance in the Cancun Challenge, with the first one being in the 2014 version of the tournament. Liberty lost both games it played to North Florida and Morgan State.
The Flames also played in the 2020 Space Coast Challenge after the 2020 Cancun Challenge was not held due to the COVID pandemic. Instead, a four team tournament was held in Melbourne, Florida. Liberty split its two games in the Space Coast Challenge to begin the 2020-21 season, falling to Purdue and defeating Mississippi State.
The eighth and final member of the 2022 field has yet to be determined.
