Coming off Wednesday’s win at Duke, Liberty will look to win its first series of the season this weekend with a three-game set at former Big South rival Winthrop.
Winthrop is one of the most frequently played teams in school history for the Flames alongside Radford and Coastal Carolina. The Eagles own a 48-47 all-time series edge between the two programs; however, it was Liberty who got a three-game sweep of Winthrop last season. The Flames knocked off Winthrop by scores of 8-1, 8-1, and 13-2 last Feb. 25-27 in the games played in Lynchburg.
The Eagles are coming off a disappointing season where they finished 18-34 overall and 11-13 in the Big South. Winthrop was picked to finish 9th out of 10 Big South teams in the preseason baseball polls coming into this season.
Winthrop opened the season with a weekend sweep over Long Island. They picked up a win on Friday, 6-3, Saturday, 9-7, and won the series finale on Sunday, 12-1. They dropped their first game of the season on Tuesday at South Carolina, falling to the Gamecocks 19-3.
Third baseman Joseph Szvetiz is one of the top returners for Winthrop after batting .298 last season. He’s come out of the gates swinging a hot bat so far this season and is currently batting .500 so far this season with a double, a triple and three RBIs.
The three games from Winthrop Ballpark have first pitch scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. Sunday.
